One Human Race: Combating Racism and Appreciating Diversity

Description of Programme

The racial riots of 1960s Singapore are a thing of the past, and Singapore is a wonderful example of racial harmony today. Or is it? What are the tensions and potential fault-lines lying beneath the surface?

This physical seminar will allow participants to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of Singapore’s multi-racial landscape. Through a survey of Singapore’s history, they will learn how Singapore’s multi-racial landscape came to be.

The session will be interactive and participatory – there will be immersive group activities, with a mix of PowerPoint slides and videos, and interactive elements such as Kahoot quizzes, Mentimeter, and moderated sharing sessions.

Through these activities, participants will be made aware of the innate and underlying prejudices one may have about different races, and understand the sources of interracial tensions and the importance of handling these with tact and sensitivity. They will learn about the dangers of digital platforms, and how one can guard against these threats.

After the seminar, participants will learn about the importance of unity in diversity, and the dynamics of interracial tensions and unity in Singapore. This seminar is a must for all who call diverse Singapore their home.
