Description of Programme
In this compelling seminar, ""Cleaning Singapore"" we delve into Singapore's remarkable transformation from a third-world slum to a thriving, clean, and green city-state. Since its early days post-independence, Singapore faced monumental challenges in cleaning up its urban environment. The seminar explores how the government tackled these challenges, including the relocation of industries, displacement of farmers, rehousing of squatter settlements, and regulation of illegal street hawkers.
These efforts have paved the way for Singaporeans to enjoy one of the highest quality-of-life environments globally today. Recognized by UNESCO, Singapore’s hawker culture has been inscribed on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, showcasing our commitment to preserving our cultural heritage amidst rapid urbanization.
Despite these achievements, the journey towards a cleaner Singapore continues. The seminar will highlight ongoing efforts and challenges in maintaining Singapore’s cleanliness and sustainability. Participants will gain insights into the role of our servicemen and the community in keeping Singapore clean and green, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility and civic pride.
Mr Loh A.T. was the former DGEP and DyCEO of the National Environment Agency who served in many senior management positions throughout his years of service.
