A Peek into the Early Singapore - Robertson Quay, Tiong Bahru and Chinatown

Description of Programme

This cycling tour ""A Peek into Early Singapore"" traces the history of Singapore, from its earliest days as a trading port to visit the godowns and shop houses along the Singapore River, through to the arrival of the British and the rise to be the Empire’s most important strategic point in the Far East. The upper reaches of the river were a hive of much light industrial activity. Tiong Bahru showcases today many examples of post war housing, as Singapore grappled with housing shortages and many other problems after the war. The transformation of Chinatown chronicles the changes in Singapore from overcrowded squatter rooms to bustling shopping centres and busy marketplaces.
